Despite the user-friendly features and interface of Mac, users often encounter alert messages and error notifications out of the blue. One common issue is Mac error code 50. This mac error happens when a user attempts to copy, delete, or move files from the external hard drive. If ever you encounter this issue, consider our suggestions on how to solve Error -50 on Mac.

Method 1: Check your Mac’s drive with the Disk Utility feature.

To check if the formatting of your drive is working properly, use the Disk Utility to perform a verification routine on the particular storage drive that has the file:

  1. Search for Disk Utility using Spotlight.
  2. Go to the Disk Utility sidebar.
  3. Select Volume > First Aid tab.
  4. Click “Verify Disk”.
  5. If errors show up, click the “Repair” button to have them fixed.

Method 2: Eject the drive and plug it again.

This is by far the simplest approach you can take. Simply eject the drive and carefully unplug it. After that, you will be requested to restart the system and plug the drive again. If you notice that it is mounting, manage the file you are trying to work with.

Method 3: Rename the file.

Want a fast solution? Try to rename the file. Give it a decent name like “file.txt”. Then, delete or move the file using the feature OS X Finder.

Method 4: Change your device’s power settings.

In case none of the first three methods work, consider changing the power settings:

  1. Go to System Preferences.
  2. Select “Energy Saver”.
  3. Check the box that says, “Put the hard disks to sleep when possible”.
  4. Click “OK”.

Method 5: Install and Run OutbyteMacRepair.

Interestingly, there are software tools out there designed to boost your Mac’s performance by emptying trash cans and deleting unwanted files from certain locations. Outbyte MacRepair is one of them. Install it and let it get rid of the file you are trying to delete.

Method 6: Copy the file using the terminal.

Okay, you don’t want to delete the file, but rather move it. Here’s what you should do:

  1. Open Finder.
  2. Press “Shift + Command + U” to open the terminal window.
  3. Drag and drop the “diskutil list” command.
  4. Select “Return”.

Method 7: Contact Mac’s Customer Service team.

If you are not confident with your troubleshooting skills, do not be discouraged because Mac has a customer support team who is willing to assist you in the process. Contact Mac Customer Support Service.

Don’t be disheartened if the first method does not work. You still have 6 others to try. At the end of the day, you will realize that fixing the Mac error code 50 is easy-peasy!
