The first beta version of macOS 14, codenamed Sonoma, has been released, bringing several bug fixes, new features, and changes to the operating system. This article provides an overview of the key improvements and issues identified by users during their testing of the beta release.

New Features & Changes

macOS 14 introduces a new systemwide typing indicator to enhance user communication and awareness. Users will experience a smooth animation when logging in, as windows animate into place and fade out on the lock screen. A new option allows users to move wallpapers on the lock screen for added customization. Users can now place widgets directly on their desktops, including widgets from their iPhones. Similar to iMessage effects, users can add reactions to their video calls for more interactive communication. Stickers can now be imported from iPhones to macOS for increased personalization. Safari now supports web apps and allows users to create profiles for different browsing experiences. Notifications now have a new animation to improve visibility and user engagement.

Resolved Issues

Users reported excessive heating on some Mac devices, which has been addressed in this release. Clicking the lock screen multiple times could cause a crash, logging users out of their Macs. This issue has been resolved. Some users experienced visual glitches while browsing the web with Safari. The beta version addresses this issue. A bug causing messages to fail to send has been resolved in macOS 14.

Remaining Issues

Users may encounter a delay in QuickTime Player recording the first few seconds when using a microphone. A workaround is suggested in the release notes. Alarms may not play when the display has been asleep for an extended period. Adjusting display settings is recommended as a workaround.
