1. Install the May 2019 Windows Update Using the ISO File

Installing the latest Windows update using the ISO file will help resolve the error 0xc0370106 on Windows 10/11. To do this, you will have to download the newest update from Microsoft’s official site and install it on your computer.

Before making the download, make sure that:

  • There is enough storage space on your computer
  • You have a stable internet connection
  • You have a blank USB drive that has at least 8GB worth of free space or a blank DVD

Create a Windows 10/11 Installation Media

Assuming that you have already downloaded the Windows Media Creation tool, follow these steps:

  1. Run the Media Creation Tool as an administrator.
  2. Agree to the license terms and proceed.
  3. On the What do you want to do? section, select Create installation media for another PC. Click Next.
  4. Select the language edition and architecture (64-bit or 32-bit).
  5. Select the media that you want to use:
    • If it is a USB drive, attach it to your computer and make sure that it is blank.
    • For the ISO file, save it on your computer and using a DVD burner, burn the file on the DVD.

How to Install a Fresh Version of Windows 10/11

After creating the media file, you have to install a fresh copy of Windows on your computer. But before proceeding, make sure that you have backed up your files because you might lose them during the installation process.

To install Windows 10/11, take the following steps:

  1. Insert the USB or DVD with the Windows file to your computer.
  2. Restart your PC.
  3. Press F12, DELETE, ESC, or F2 keys to bring the boot menu.
  4. Select your language, time, and other preferences, and click Next.
  5. Select Install Windows.

You will be prompted to either keep your files or discard them. Depending on the choice that you make, continue with the installation process.
Check if Windows Sandbox is still reporting any errors.

2. Run Windows Sandbox in Safe Mode

Safe Mode is the barebones version of Windows and uses a limited set of files, apps, and settings. If conflicts with other software cause the Windows SandBox and WDAG error 0xc0370106, then running your PC in Safe Mode will help solve the issue. Here is how to run Windows Sandbox in Safe Mode:

  1. Go to Start > Settings.
  2. Select Update & Security > Recovery.
  3. Under Advanced startup, choose Restart now.
  4. On the Choose an option screen, select Troubleshoot > Advanced options > Startup Settings > Restart.
  5. After your computer restarts, press F4 to launch it in Safe Mode.

Now, try launching Windows Sandbox in Safe Mode to see if there are any errors.

3. Return Your Computer to an Earlier Working State

Using System Restore, you can return your computer to a point in time when Windows Sandbox was doing just fine. This will entail undoing any updates and other installations that might be interfering with the function of the Windows Sandbox app.

Here is how to perform a system restore on your Windows 10/11 computer:

  1. Into the Windows search box, type “system restore.”
  2. Go to the System Protection tab and select System Restore.
  3. Choose from the list of restore points on your computer.
  4. Continue with the onscreen directions to restore your computer to an earlier functioning state.

During the system restore process, you will be informed of the apps and updates that are going to be removed. If you are comfortable with these changes to your computer, then you can proceed.

Notably, system restore will only work if you have a restore point already in place on your computer. If you don’t, you will have to use the other two solutions offered here.

If you want to create a restore point in case you encounter Windows issues sometime in the future, the following are the steps to take:

  1. Into the Windows search box, type “create a restore point.”
  2. On the System Properties dialogue box, click the System Protection tab.
  3. Click the Configure button.
  4. Click Turn on System protection.
  5. Slide the Max Usage slider to choose the percentage of disk space that you are going to dedicate to System Restore.

Wrapping up

If the latest Windows update breaks Sandbox and shows the error 0xc0370106, then try the fixes above to work around the issue. Most Windows experts recommend installing a new version of the update with the help of a media creation tool. Alternatively, you can choose to run Windows Sandbox in Safe Mode or perform a system restore that will undo any changes to your computer that might be to blame for the error 0xc0370106.
