PhotoScape has a user-friendly photo editor with a smooth interface. Using PhotoScape gives users access to basic photo enhancement tools like color adjustment, cutting, resizing, printing, and GIF animation. Even better, it also has other functionalities like batch editing function, a built-in screen capture tool, image viewer, and other effects.

PhotoScape’s editing toolkit is sure to impress. Its features are great for beginners because they are easy to understand and well-labeled. Users can tweak around with the options when editing their photo and they do not have to worry because the app has an undo function so you can start over again in case, they don’t like the results.

The Batch editor function is another great feature that will definitely catch the eye of many users. It’s especially convenient for those who edit a lot of photos on a regular basis. It allows you to rename, convert, or resize several photos. RAW images can also be quickly converted to JPEG images with the RAW converter. What this also means is that the app can open RAW photos from camera brands like Canon, Nikon, and Olympus.

Here are some of the noteworthy features of the PhotoScape app:

The Viewer

This feature is nothing special, but it is enough to do the job. You can get a standard thumbnail view with a folders list on the side, or a bigger preview window with a few functions for image rotation, viewing EXIF data, and others. The biggest thumbnail size is very small, and sorting options are limited. Each of the PhotoScape tabs has its own thumbnail browser.

The Editor

This is where most of the actions happen. In this tab, you can perform a multitude of adjustments, modifications, and effects to your images. There is everything you can think of when it comes to photo editing — from one-click auto-levels or contrast to advanced color curves to loading and saving presets. You also have a lot of color and tone adjustments to choose from, as well as a number of filter effects. You can choose to be practical with noise reduction or you can add some fun using cartoon filters. You can also spice up your images with a selection of fun and funky frames.

Batch Processing

The Batch Editor allows you to apply almost all the functions of the Editor to multiple files at once. This includes color and tone adjustments, frames, objects, text, resizing, sharpening, and effects. You can see the results before exporting a single or all of the photos with your edits. You can also choose to save your batch editor settings so you can re-use it later.

Page Layouts

This page module is actually a multi-photo layout tool with more than100 options for grid layouts you can choose from. Just drag and drop your images into the boxes to design a quick collage. Individual photos can also be moved and scaled to fit the grid boxes. Moreover, you can even adjust the size of the layout, round the corners, add margins, and add frames or filter effects to all images in the layout. After your layout has been completed, you can save it as a new file or pass it to the editor.

Other Features include:

  • Combine – Lets you join multiple photos either vertically or horizontally to create one final photo.
  • Animated GIF – Allows you to use multiple photos to create a final animated photo.
  • Print – You can print portrait shots, carte de visites(CDV), passport photos
  • Splitter – Just like the name suggests, it allows the user to slice a photo into several pieces.
  • Screen Capture – This lets you capture your screenshot and save it.
  • Color Picker – Enables you to zoom in on images, search and pick a color.
  • Raw Converter – Convert RAW to JPG file.
  • Face Search – Allows you to search for similar faces on the Internet.

It does have a few shortcomings, however. In a few places, Korean characters can be in some dialog boxes, and sometimes the language was not very clear in describing the functions. The program is also limited to working with only one document at a time, so if you want to change the photo you are working on, you will need to save and close the current file. It also means you can’t do more advanced editing such as a photo montage of multiple images fading into each other. Although there are a few pixel-level editing tools here, they are fairly limited. That said, it will accommodate most of what the average person will want to do with photos, and offers quite a few fun extras as well.

The Verdict

PhotoScape is an all-in-one style photo editor that is free for non-commercial use and runs on Windows 98/Me/NT/2000/XP/Vista/10 and Mac. While PhotoScape is no Photoshop-killer, it is highly accomplished. The editing features are what will bring most people to the program, and it does not disappoint. With so many tools to choose from though, even if you don’t make full use of PhotoScape’s full feature set, you’re sure to get value from this remarkably versatile free program.
