So what is a .8ck file, what does it do, and how do you open it?

What is a .8ck File?

8CK files refer to documents generated by the TI-83/84 Plus Application developed by Texas Instruments Incorporated. TI-83 and TI-84 are popular handheld advanced math and science graphing calculators that is most often used for statistics. The 8CK files can be transferred from a Windows computer to a TI-83 Plus or TI-84 Plus calculator using Texas Instruments TI Connect CE, and vice versa.

The TI-83 Plus graphing calculator is an easy-to-use graphing calculator that can be used for math and science. It allows students to graph and compare functions, and perform data plotting and analysis. The TI-84 Plus graphing calculator, on the other hand, adds the function of interactive geometry, inequality graphing, as well as real-world data collection and analysis. Data from these calculators can be exported in a .8ck file.

You can then install the TI-Navigator system on your computer to access the files, analyze, and manipulate data.

Here are some of the other file extensions related to .8ck:

  • .8xg – TI-83/84 Plus Group
  • .8xi – TI-83/84 Plus Picture
  • .8xk – TI-83/84 Plus Application Upgrade
  • .8xp – TI-83/84 Plus Calculator Program
  • .8xs – TI-83/84 Plus String Data
  • .8xu – TI-83/84 Plus OS Upgrade
  • .8xv – TI-83/84 Plus Variable Data
  • .8xb – TI-83/84 Plus Backup Memory Image
  • .8xc – TI-83/84 Plus Complex Variable Data

Can .8ck File Contain a Virus?

.8ck files are legitimate files associated with the series of calculators designed by Texas Instruments. If you cannot open an 8ck file, that does not automatically mean that it contains a virus. It might be because you don’t have the required application installed on your computer. Or it could mean that you encountered a file association error.

However, it is possible for malware to disguise itself as a .8ck file. Malicious software often camouflages itself as legitimate files or processes to evade detection by security programs. Clicking on these files will initiate the installation of the malicious software or the download of additional payload on your computer.

So if you downloaded the .8ck file from an untrustworthy source or as an email attachment, make sure to scan it first using your anti-malware app to check if it has been infected. Also, don’t download files from websites that you are not familiar with or look suspicious.

How to Open a .8ck File?

To open an 8ck file, all you need to do is double-click on it, then Windows scans the filename extension. If Windows is able to recognize the file extension, it launches the file using the programs that are associated with it. But if it doesn’t recognize the file extension, you will get this error message:

Windows can’t open this file:

File: abc.8ck

To open this file, Windows needs to know what program you want to use to open it. Windows can go online to look it up automatically, or you can manually select from a list of programs that are installed on your computer.

If you cannot open an 8ck file, it could either be because you don’t have the right program to open it or there is an error with file associations on your device. Let’s look at the steps below on how to open an 8ck file:

Step 1. Install Texas Instruments TI Connect CE.

Texas Instruments TI Connect CE is an app designed to transfer files between a connected TI-84 Plus graphing calculator and a computer using a link cable. The program supports the TI-84 Plus, TI-84 Plus C Silver Edition, TI-84 Plus CE, and TI-84 Plus Silver Edition calculators.

TI Connect CE lets you connect multiple TI-84 graphing calculators simultaneously, enabling you to transfer data, install downloaded applications, and install updates to the calculators’ operating systems (OS). You can even take and manage screen captures using your graphing calculator and convert them into JPEG, BMP, GIF, PNG, and TIF formats, which you can use as a background on your calculator. This app also allows you to create and edit TI Basic Programs via the Program Editor workspace, then transfer them directly to your connected graphing calculator.

To use Texas Instruments TI Connect CE, you can download it from here: https://education.ti.com/en/products/computer-software/ti-connect-ce-sw

Once downloaded, install the app on your computer. Go to the 8ck file you wish to open, right-click on it, then choose Texas Instruments TI Connect CE from the option. If you can’t find this app, choose Others and navigate to the Texas Instruments TI Connect CE program folder. You should now be able to open your 8ck files.

Step 2. Fix the File Association Error.

If you have installed the required program but you still cannot open a 8ck file, you need to fix the file association error to be able to open the file. To do this:

  1. Right-click the 8ck file you want to open, and then click Open With.
  2. In the Open With dialog box, choose the program you want the file to open with, which is Texas Instruments TI Connect CE.
  3. If you can’t find Texas Instruments TI Connect CE, click Browse to locate the program manually.
  4. Tick off Always use the selected program to open this kind of file.

If this doesn’t work, you can try this instead:

  1. On your computer, navigate to Control Panel.
  2. Go to Control Panel Home > Default Programs, then click Set Associations.
  3. Choose 8ck from the list of file types, then click Change Program.
  4. Choose Texas Instruments TI Connect CE from the list of programs, then click OK.

Summary

Unfamiliar files, such as 8ck files, might be harder to deal with because you can’t readily open them, but it doesn’t mean that they are malicious. Most of the time, you can’ t open the 8ck file because you don’t have the right program installed or you’re probably having file association issues. Installing the program and setting it as the default app for the 8ck file extension should easily resolve the problem.
