However, as with other existing communication apps out there, it is also without a flaw. In this article, we take a look at Discord as a tool and one issue that is associated with it; the Discord No Route Error.

What is Discord?

Discord is an instant messaging platform created for those who want to start communities. Using this tool, people can communicate via voice or video call, or even chat. People can also exchange files and media in personal chats.

Although the target market of Discord was obviously gamers, the developers eventually realized it couldn’t beat Steam. Hence, they introduced more features that more users can take advantage of.

Expert Tip: For smoother PC performance, consider using a PC optimization tool. It handles junk files, incorrect settings, and harmful apps. Make sure it's right for your system, and always check the EULA and Privacy Policy.

About Discord No Route Error

Just this year, many Discord users reported that they could not join voice channels because of the Discord No Route Error. This issue occurs while trying to connect to a particular voice channel in a server, but the network or ISP won’t connect. Simply said, this happens because the platform is prevented from connecting to a voice server due to issues associated with firewall restrictions, VPNs, and dropouts.

What Causes the Discord No Route Error?

Network disruption is believed to be the primary reason why this error occurs. However, there are also a few other possible cases where this issue may surface. We’ve identified them below:

The IP address assigned to a device was altered. This happens to devices assigned with dynamic IPs that regularly change. To fix this, you only need to restart your modem, router, and PC.

  • A third-party antivirus suite or firewall is blocking Discord. When this happens, Discord won’t be allowed to establish connections with an external server.
  • An end device is using a VPN without User Datagram Protocol or UDP. This may be a regular occurrence because Discord is created to support VPN services that run under the User Datagram Protocol.
  • The network admin is blocking Discord. If you are using Discord at work or from a private network, it is likely that it is blocked. As a result, you may be seeing the error.
  • Discord’s server voice region is not compatible with your client. This may happen if you are trying to connect to a server from a different continent. To resolve this, ask the admin to change the voice region of the channel’s server.
  • Quality of Service (QoS) does not support your network. It is also possible that your network is not designed to support Quality of Service High Packet Priority. As a solution, you may disable this from Discord’s Voice and Video settings.

7 Discord No Route Error Fixes to Try

So, what to do about the Discord No Route error? If you are looking for ways to resolve it, this section will give you troubleshooting methods to try. To guarantee the best results, work your way downwards until you find a fix that can effectively resolve the issue.

Fix #1: Restart your modem, router, and PC

Before anything else, you need to ensure that the error can be fixed with a simple restart. Often times, the error may be triggered, especially when your IPv6 connection is constantly being disrupted by a dynamic IP address that keeps changing.

In this fix, you start by restarting your router or modem, and then your PC. You don’t have to reset your network settings. You may just unplug your device from the power source and connect it again.

Upon the next startup, check if you are able to connect to Discord’s voice servers. If the error is still there, try the next fix.

Fix #2: Uninstall any third-party antivirus solution or firewall

As mentioned above, another possible reason behind the Discord No Route error is an overprotective firewall or antivirus suite. To have this fixed, uninstall your firewall or antivirus solution and check if Discord can connect to a new voice server. For a simpler guide on what to do, refer to the instructions below:

  1. Press the Windows + R keys together to access the Run dialog box.
  2. Input appwiz.cpl into the text field and press Enter. This will launch Programs and Features.
  3. Locate your third-party firewall or antivirus solution from the list of installed apps. Right-click on it and select Uninstall.
  4. Follow the on-screen instructions to completely uninstall the program from your system.
  5. Reboot your PC and check if you can use Discord without any problems.

Fix #3: Uninstall your VPN or use one that supports UDP

Are you actively using a VPN service with Discord? Does it support the User Datagram Protocol? Then there is a chance that it’s preventing you from connecting to a voice server. The Discord app is designed to support VPNs that use the User Datagram Protocol only.

If you are not sure if your VPN solution supports UDP, consult your service provider. If it doesn’t, then you may want to consider another VPN service that uses UDP.

Fix #4: Check if Discord is blocked by your network administrator

If you notice that the Discord No Route error only appears when trying to use the app at work or at school, then it is likely that communication apps have been blocked by your network admin.

Take note that this fix may get you into trouble. But if you wish to pursue and resolve the No Route error, here’s what you should do:

  1. Launch the Run utility by pressing the Windows + R keys.
  2. Input control and press Enter to open Control Panel.
  3. Navigate to Network and Internet and select Network and Sharing Center.
  4. Click the Connections hyperlink that is associated with your network connection.
  5. Select Properties.
  6. Go to the Networking tab and click Internet Protocol Version 4 (TCP/IPv4).
  7. Click Properties again.
  8. Scroll down to the DNS Server Settings section and change the value to Use the following DNS server addresses.
  9. Next, set the values to the following:
    • Preferred DNS server: 8.8.8.8
    • Alternate DNS server: 8.8.4.4
  10. Hit OK to apply and save your changes.
  11. Reboot your PC.

Fix #5: Change the voice region of your server

If you are only seeing the error when trying to connect to a colleague from a different continent, then the issue is probably associated with your choice of server. In this case, ask the admin of the server to change the voice region. This can be done by going to Server Settings and selecting Server Region.

Fix #6: Disable QoS on Discord

Some users have reportedly resolved the Discord No Route error by disabling QoS. Here’s a guide on how to do this:

  1. Launch the Discord app and click the gear icon next to your account.
  2. Go to App Settings and select Voice and Video.
  3. Scroll down to Quality of Service and make sure that the Enable Quality of Service High Packet Priority option is disabled.
  4. Close Discord and relaunch it to check if the error is still occurring.

Fix #7: Flush the DNS setting

Resetting your IP configurations by flushing your DNS setting can also resolve the error. To do so, follow the steps below:

  1. Press the Windows + R keys to launch the Run dialog box.
  2. Input cmd and press CTRL + Shift + Enter to open an elevated Command Prompt.
  3. Into the command line, input the following commands and hit Enter after each one:
    • ipconfig /release
    • ipconfig /flushdns
    • ipconfig /renew
  4. Reboot your computer.
