The game Gears of War is so back and it’s become more thrilling that it ever was. Method #2: Restart Your Microsoft Update.

There are instances when, upon stopping the Microsoft Update service, the 0x8024001E error appears. However, just to be sure, you might want to restart the service.

Restarting the Microsoft Update service is easy. Simply follow these steps:

  1. Open the Start menu. You can do so by simply pressing the Windows key.
  2. In the text field, type Run to open the Run dialogue box. Alternatively, you can also press the Windows and R keys together.
  3. When the Run dialogue box is up, input Services.msc and hit Enter.
  4. Scroll down to the list and find Windows Update.
  5. Right-click on it and choose Start.

The Microsoft Update service should restart by now if it had ever been stopped. After this, restart your computer and check if the 0x8024001E error still shows. If it does, then continue to the next method.

Method 3: Repair the Registry Key.

A corrupt registry key can also trigger the appearance of error 0x8024001E. Luckily, there is a way to resolve it and it’s not as difficult as you think. You simply need to run the Automatic Repair tool and it will do the work of finding and fixing any corrupt registry entries. Take note, though, it is very important that you do not interrupt the automatic repair process. Otherwise, you will make the problem worse.

To repair any corrupt registry keys, follow the instructions below:

  1. Go to Start and enter Advanced Startup Options in the text field.
  2. Choose Advanced Startup Options from the results. It should then open the General Settings menu.
  3. Locate the Advanced Startup option.
  4. Click Restart Now to restart your Windows computer in Advanced Startup mode.
  5. Wait for the restart process to complete.
  6. Click the Troubleshoot button and select Advanced Options.
  7. A new window should then open.
  8. Hit Automatic Repair to restart your computer again.
  9. If prompted, choose your administrative account.

By now, the Automatic Repair tool should start looking for any corrupt entries on your registry and attempt to fix them. Once it’s done, the 0x8024001E error should most likely be resolved. If not, proceed to the next method.

Method #4: Rename the Software Distribution Folder.

You’ve already restarted the Microsoft Update service, but the 0x8024001E error still appears. If that is the case, you might need to rename the Software Distribution folder.

Here’s how:

  1. Go to the Start menu and type Run. You can also just press the Windows + R keys.
  2. When the Run dialogue box, enter Services.msc and hit Enter.
  3. Scroll down to the list and locate Windows Update.
  4. Right-click on it and choose Stop.
  5. Open File Explorer. Navigate to C: > SoftwareDistribution folder.
  6. Right-click on it and select Rename.
  7. Give this folder a new name like SoftwareDistributionOld.
  8. Exit the folder and open the Start menu again.
  9. Open Run by pressing the Windows + R keys or by simply typing Run.
  10. Type Services.msc and hit Enter.
  11. Scroll down the list and locate Windows Update.
  12. Right-click on it and choose Start.

Wait until the entire process is complete. After that, restart your computer and check if the 0x8024001E still appears.

Method #5: Use the Built-In System Restore Tool.

If you’ve done everything but the error still persists, your last resort is the System Restore tool. It works by restoring your computer to a certain state from an earlier date. If you are unable to download and play Gears of War because of a recent change you’ve made on your computer, then this method should solve your problem.

To run System Restore, follow these steps:

  1. Go to Start and type System Restore in the text field.
  2. Choose System Restore from the results.
  3. Follow the instructions provided.

The system restore process should start now. Once it is complete, restart your computer. Hopefully, the error is now gone.
