How To Improve Call Quality While Using Your Android Phone?

Woman Talking on Cell Phone

The most important feature of a mobile phone is the ability to make and receive calls. Whether it’s a basic phone or a smartphone, you want the sound to be crisp and clear when you talk to someone over the phone. There are many ways to achieve the best call quality using an Android phone, and most of them involve just a bit of tinkering with your phone settings. If you have poor phone call quality, it is easier to notice the improvement because you can tell the changes quickly.

The following tips may not give you the best voice quality on a cell phone, but they will undoubtedly improve your call quality at the very least. Check out our tips on how to improve your phone call quality below.

1. Check your microphone and earpiece for obstructions.

It is the first thing everyone should do when the call quality is weak, but this is sadly often overlooked. Is the microphone or ear speaker blocked by anything? When we say anything, it means just anything. Is your finger blocking your mouthpiece when you hold your phone during a call? Or is your hair getting into the earpiece, that’s why you hear a muffled sound? Or maybe your phone case is covering holes that should not be covered? Is your phone new and you don’t want to remove the plastic wrapping yet in case it gets dirty?

Here’s what you have to remember: make sure that all holes are free of any obstructions when you’re making a call. Whether it’s plastic, case, dirt, paper, gum or whatever, it does not belong there. Keep your phone clean and clear at all times. If you did not see any blockages, then proceed to the next step.

2. Enable high quality calling settings.

The call settings vary depending on your carrier, your phone manufacturer, your phone model and the Android version you have installed on your phone. Most manufacturers like Samsung, Sony, and LG allow you to fiddle with the voice quality settings in the main Settings menu. On the latest Samsung Galaxy devices, these are called Noise Reduction and Personal Call settings while on LG phones, these are found in the Personalize Call Settings tab. When these settings are enabled, the phone can send and receive audio with better quality.

Enabling high-quality calling usually doesn’t cost a thing. But that’s not always the case. For example, if you’re using an older service plan from your carrier, fiddling with these settings may not solve your problem. You might need to contact your carrier to fix these settings.

3. Try Wi-Fi calling.

Wi-Fi calling has become popular as the coverage of internet connectivity expands. It is your best bet when you’re in a location with a weak cellular signal. Wi-Fi calls may not result in the best sounding calls because of the little echo and flat sound, but at least they are clear, and you can understand each other. And this could be a significant improvement sometimes.

Just like the advanced calling features, the settings for Wi-Fi calling vary depending on the manufacturer or model. Most major carriers in the US – Sprint, T-Mobile, AT&T, and Verizon – support Wi-Fi calling. To enable Wi-Fi calling on most Android devices, follow these steps:

  • Swipe from the top of your screen to pull down the notification shade on your phone.
  • Long-press the Wi-Fi icon until the Wi-Fi settings appear.
  • Select Wi-Fi Preferences.
  • Tap Advanced.
  • Choose Wi-Fi Calling and switch it to On.
  • If you are using a Samsung here is how is to search for it:

You have to remember two things when you use Wi-Fi calling. First, you need an internet connection to use Wi-Fi calling. Second, you need both phone and carrier support for Wi-Fi calling to work. Most newer models of Android phones support Wi-Fi calling, but unlocked phones might not be able to use this feature because of carrier restrictions. In this case, your only option is the next one on this list.

4. Use apps to make voice calls over the internet.

It is probably the easiest method to get the best call quality using an Android phone. All you have to do is download an app that makes voice calls over Wi-Fi, LTE or even 3G connections.

ut before you download any apps, ensure you have sufficient space on your device. You may consider cleaning out junk files and apps to free up space, using tools designed for this purpose.  It helps free up space for new apps and ensures that your device is working efficiently – no lags and app crashes. There are numerous apps available on the Google Play Store that you can use, including Skype, Hangouts, and Duo among others.

  • Skype – You can make free Skype-to-Skype voice calls, and even voice calls on your mobile phone, tablet or computer. You can also make outbound calls to any phone, mobile or landline, anywhere in the world for cheap call rates.
  • Hangouts – Calls from Hangouts to other Hangouts account is free, as well as the calls from the US to other US and Canadian numbers using the Hangouts Dialer add-on. But if you’re going to use Hangouts to call people to other countries except for US and Canada, the rates differ depending on location. For example, it costs 1¢ per minute to call someone in the UK while it costs 20¢ per minute to speak to someone in Ukraine.
  • Duo – This is a free app-to-app-based video calling app, but you can also do voice-only calls within the app. The sound is clear, and the app is easy to use. The only problem is that you both need to have a Duo app installed for the call to go through.

In conclusion, several strategies can be used to enhance the phone call quality on your Android device. If you’re experiencing difficulties with call clarity, you might want to explore these methods to potentially improve the voice quality on your device.
